APPARATUS DELIVERIES

Grifton Volunteer Fire Department, Pitt County - RESCUE 43
GRIFTON -
In January 2004 the Grifton Fire Department, North Carolina, upgraded their response capabilities by adding a Hackney DFC1173R Heavy Rescue to their fleet. The chassis of choice was a Spartan Advantage MFD four-door cab with 10" raised roof. The rear of the cab was reconfigured to provide a full width command desk behind the driver and officer seats. The desk is constructed of stainless steel and slides toward the two SCBA seats mounted on the center back wall. On either side of the desk are locking storage cabinets for instruments and reference books. Above the desk is a stainless shelf used for mounting the monitor from the camera mounted on a telescoping pole on the exterior.

The 19.5-foot long body features a recessed roof that accommodates a 14.5-foot and 12-foot long storage compartment and the Will-Burt light tower. The light tower is equipped with six (6) 900-watt MagnaFire lamps and has dual-directional capability.  Excluding the roof storage, a whopping 700 cu.ft. of storage space is provided in the body, enhance by the Hackney drop/pinch frame that provides 40" of compartment depth from floor to ceiling.

Storage accommodations includes numerous adjustable shelves, slide-out and slide/tilt trays, a 68" high x 36" deep two-sided tool board using PacTrac panels. Transverse tunnels for a tokes basket stretcher, folding ladder and two long backboards, slide-out SCBA rack for eight complete SCBA’s in back-up and go configuration and pike pole storage. A full length awning is provided on the right side of the body.

There are four 10,000# receivers located around the apparatus – one inside the drop-down front bumper, one under the rear bumper and one each forward of the left and right rear wheels. The 9000-lb Warn portable winch is stored behind the drop-down front bumper, freeing up valuable compartment space. Located in the right rear compartment is a two-bottle SCBA fill enclosure and cascade fill control panel. Adjacent in the aft section of the wheelhouse compartment are fifteen spare SCBA bottle storage tubes.

The rear extrication compartment is 73" high x 42" wide x 40" deep and features two electric rewind reels in the top and slide-out trays for mounting the various extrication tools and accessories in a convenient, rapidly accessible location.

A 25-kw Onan ProTec PTO generator is installed inside the left front compartment and powers the light tower, two tri-pod MagnaFire flood lights, 110-volt compartment lighting, refrigerator and command cab outlets. The cord reel is mounted in the extended front bumper, along with a utility air hose reel. The multi-plexed electrical system operates the Code 3 warning package, halogen scene lights, Rom track lighting and other 12-volt systems.
