FireNews.net Incident Report
Large Multiple Alarm Landfill Fire

Published MON MAR 22

LENOIR COUNTY - Crews are on the scene of a large landfill fire off of Hodges Farm Road in northwestern Lenoir County. LaGrange VFD was initially dispatched to the incident around noon yesterday. Upon arrival they found a large mound of brush, stumps, and yard waste burning heavily.

Command requested mutual aid for tanker support and brush units from North Lenoir Fire & Rescue & NC Forestry Service. Crews had a knockdown in just a few hours. Landfill employees used bulldozers to move dirt over the burning mounds to help smother the fire. The incident was place under control about 2:30pm.

At approximately 4pm LaGrange VFD was dispatched to return to the location
for a rekindle. Wind and location have created a thought firefighting situation here. The nearest water supply is a hydrant approximately a mile from the scene.

Mutual aid from North Lenoir, Sandy Bottom, Hugo, Southwood, Deep Run and Wyse Fork battled the blaze throughout the night. Additional units from Seven Springs and Jason FD were called in this morning to relieve crews that fought the blaze all night.

The cause of the incident has not been determined. Lenoir County Emergency Management and NC Forestry Service are also on scene providing command and resources support.
