KNOTT'S ISLAND - On Friday March 19,
2004 the Knotts Island Volunteer Fire Department was inspected by
the State of North Carolina and passed it's first ever ISO
inspection.
This represents a significant
milestone for the 44 year-old Fire Department. It also will make an
impact on the community, allowing for insurance reductions, and
opportunities for the department to recieve funding. Tentativley
the department has been given a 9/S rating, which should be
finalized and in place in the next few months.
This rating and the year-long
effort to bring it to fruition are due in no small part to the
painstaking efforts of Fire Chief Nathan A. Thorn, who's dedication
to the community and the department are unparalleld.
His determination was the driving force behind this effort, and he
spent countless hours away from his family to see this project
through.
The department plans to continue on
this path, and investigate the means to lower the rating, by
construction of a new fire station and purchasing new equipment.
Providing even more benfit to this small close-knit community.
