Rescue From Contruction Site

Published THU APR 08

CHARLOTTE - The Charlotte Fire Department successfully responded to a Hi-Angle rescue call when a worker was injured at the Central Piedmont Community College construction site located at 1142 Elizabeth Ave just east of downtown Charlotte.

Engine 1 firefighters were first on the scene and after establishing incident command quickly called for a Hi Angle Rescue response.

The male in his 40’s was found suffering serious injuries and clinging to steel beam approximately 3 floors above the ground.  Battalion Chief 1 officer arrived on scene and assumed command.

Along with Engine 1, Engine 8, 64, Ladder 1 and Rescue 10 were called into service to complete this technical rescue operation.

FireFighters gained access to the injured worker by using a 40’ foot extension ladder where they stabilized his injuries and prepared him to be lowered to waiting firefighters and a Medic crew.

Charlotte FireFighters, assisted by on-site workers, utilized a crane to lower the victim by his safety harness he was wearing at the time of the accident. The patient was safely removed from a very dangerous location in approximately 30 minutes and on his way to an area hospital with what appeared to be lower leg injuries.
