Second Alarm for Building Fire Friday Night
Published FRI APR 12
CHARLOTTE - A fire at the old Tasty
Platter and Bel Aire Motel went to two alarms Friday night.
Two years ago there was a fire in the motel portion.
Most of the motel portion was demolished. Shortly thereafter, the
Tasty Platter closed.
The fire building had been abandoned for about two years and
was inhabited by vagrants. The restaurant was L-shaped, ordinary brick
construction.
Two rooms of the motel and the motel office were still
standing on the "B" side of the restaurant. Engine 27 arrived,
established Command, and initiated an interior attack. Ladder 27
positioned for a defensive attack with their aerial.
Battalion Chief 2 assumed Command on arrival.
Additional first alarm companies established a water supply and
assisted with suppression. An aggressive interior attack was mounted
from Division "C" with multiple lines.
Companies operating inside had difficulty reaching the
fire in Division B because of a fire wall between the restaurant the
the motel portion of the building. Additional lines were put into
service to contain the fire on the B side. BC1 assumed command upon
his arrival. A second alarm was transmitted bringing an additional
three engines, a ladder and another Battalion Chief. Several 1.75" and
2.5" lines were used.
The fire never went defensive, despite the heavy fire
conditions. Control was obtained in less than one hour.
