Warehouse Fire
Published THU NOV 20
WINSTON-SALEM - At approximately 17:30
hrs on November 18, the Winston Salem Fire Department was dispatched
to a large warehouse complex for a reported fire inside the
structure.
The normal first alarm companies were on another
incident on the adjoining highway. The alarm on the highway turned
out to be a false call and those companies diverted to the building
fire.
The first due engine (Engine-5) reported a one story
commercial structure with smoke showing from a roll-up door. Further
investigation revealed a working fire inside with what appeared to
be pallets on fire, covering a 50x50 area.
Crews began an aggressive interior attack with two
handlines and assigned in-coming companies specific jobs. Once
inside, there was an explosion that involved unknown chemicals.
One firefighter was treated and released from the
hospital. Crews were on the scene for approximately 5 hours. The
chemicals turned out to be petroleum based and were contained
on-site or consumed by the fire.
Crews did an out standing job on a large scale incident
that had potential to be much worse. The bldg was being renovated
into mixed occupancies from an old brewery.
